“Matteo Lane mentioned that he’s been in standup for 16 years…and I don’t know how to comprehend how people can just somehow switch their life perspectives with such ease.
Let me clarify: in order to succeed in any performance industry, you have to constantly switch between life perspectives. To achieve a goal you need to understand where you stand and where you’re looking to get to and how you’re going to close that gap. This requires you to create a perspective on how that gap closing will look. Now, some people’s perspective on that journey is to think that you should be achieving “success” by a year or two of work. Some people’s perspective is that you should be achieving “success” after 5 years…or ten…or twenty…truthfully, it really is wholly subjective and no one can really seem to agree on how long it takes for you to “make it.”
And then, on top of that subjectivity, no one can agree on what that “success” really looks like. Is it having a televised special as a comedian? Or just booking a show? Is it booking broadway in theater? Or just helming a national tour? Or is it commercial that yields passive income returns? Is it designing your own line as a designer? Or getting a sponsorship? What even is “success?” Who’s life perspective wins out?”
